SUMMARY:From Dart on the Floor to Dart in the Chair to Refined Chair Work.
DESCRIPTION:Let's explore going from 1) Dart procedures on the floor\, to 2) Dart movements in a chair in preparation to standing\, to 3) easy\, guided standing. Navigating from the crude to the refined\, you can ensure that any of your students — no matter how pulled down — can be guided to standing in the easiest way possible within the first 15-minutes of an Alexander Technique lesson.

SUMMARY:Meeting the Stimulus of Singing through the Principles of Alexander Technique
DESCRIPTION:The stimulus of singing calls upon one of the most complex co-ordinations in which a human being can engage\, involving a “kaleidoscopic array of neuro-muscular responses\,” according to London neurologist Barry Wyke. The constructs of singing are pitch\, intensity\, vowel\, duration\, and timbre\, each a tool for intervening and affecting vocal use.\n \n Among the constructs of singing\, it is duration that takes the utterances of speech into the realm of song. Speech prolonged¬–singing–makes celebrated demands upon the breath of a singer. A singer is a professional breather. \n A prolonged string of vowels and consonants over a musical phrase makes extraordinary demands upon the breath. In meeting those demands\, the Alexander Technique is justly recognized as being of particular importance. One of its signature procedures is whispered “ah.” It has a profound effect upon the body and the vocal tract\, the internal cathedral of music making.\n \n It is important to look at that vowel through the eyes of a phonetician. We will see that the vowel “ah” is classified according to the position of the tongue as low back\, as opposed to the vowel ee\, high front. As a class we note\, practice\, and discern the difference between the tongue’s resting freely in its low back position as opposed to lingual stiffness and depression that occludes the vocal tract\, an important intelligence for teacher and singer. We will look at the directive “smile behind the eyes” and its beneficial effect on the vocal tract\, lips of the glottis to lips of the mouth.\n \n Among the variables of singing\, again\, pitch\, intensity\, vowel\, duration\, and timbre none is more ripe for intervention than duration. Remove the necessity of duration and we effect the preparatory set\, the structure of our habit. \n Staccato demands that exhalation be artfully and skillfully opposed. It can be as expansive and joyful as laughter. We laugh together\, sing together\, and cultivate staccato\, even staccatissimo. We learn to outline a phrase in staccatissimo and bypass our habits of prolongation. \n \n Another means to positively affect our singing is to deprive it of yet another stimulus\, that of intensity. “Building on the soft” is a vital concept in the history of vocal pedagogy. In best practice it retains the vitality of our full sound. Classically described by an Italian master\, the third voice is “like unto the spell of a magic echo\, wafted from afar.” The third voice in practice cancels habit and promotes vocal health. As a class we combine the third voice and staccatissimo and create a vocal structure devoid of habit. \n \n Lastly\, and this may be easier for Alexander learners than for others\, we practice singing on an unfolding series of upbeats. Upbeats demand that we go forward and up\, never musically downward. Upbeats are the foundation of an interpretive theory. Upbeats teach singing and living “in the along\,” as poet Gwendolyn Brooks urges us. We individually and collectively practice what has been learned.

SUMMARY:Teaching the Alexander Technique to the Modern End-gainer
DESCRIPTION:You know that everyone would benefit from the Alexander Technique\, but this kind of broad marketing doesn't help build your practice. Even worse\, when you try to communicate the value of this work\, your passion starts to sound like proselytizing! This workshop is designed for the teachers who know that they offer solutions to students in need\, but struggle to communicate to people outside of chronic pain and performing arts communities. Serena pulls on her experience in both performing arts programs and high-level corporate workspaces to explain why Alexander Technique struggles to break out of the performing arts and how to change that. Beyond marketing\, we'll discuss the challenges of working with people who are unfamiliar with body-work practices and help bridge the gap between their life and their wellness to uniquely place the Alexander Technique as the solution that best integrates with their goals and daily life. \n \n ~~\n \n This workshop will largely be presentation and discussion based with interactive elements. This will make it highly accessible to teachers and trainees who are interested in a new perspective from a teacher working predominately outside of the performing arts space.

SUMMARY:Walking and Running: Thinking Outside the Box
DESCRIPTION:Take your understanding of use in walking and running to a new level and enjoy the practical benefits of this knowledge! Apply Alexander principles to walking and running with a view of thinking ‘outside the box’. This includes a consideration of movement in 3 planes\, working with wedges and other external aids\, and a re-framing of ‘the head leads and the body follows’. \n All welcome\, no previous experience required. This workshop is suited to all ages and fitness levels.

SUMMARY:Full Volume\, Full Presence
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will develop our relationship to the ground and refine our directional pathways so that we can effectively center our students while teaching them to center themselves. Whether performing on stage or navigating daily life\, "where we are" informs "how we are."\n \n Together we'll deepen our spatial awareness by exploring circular and spherical movement patterns drawn from Tai Chi principles—then discover the balance and volume that synchronize stability and freedom in our hands-on practice. By the end of this workshop\, participants will have gained practical tools for integrating this expanded spatial awareness into their teaching\, enabling them to guide students with greater clarity\, precision\, and depth.

SUMMARY:Giving Yourself a Lesson
DESCRIPTION:Title\n Description: We are more often taught how to give lessons to others than we are taught to give them to ourselves. Yet working on one's own use is the core of the Technique\, and the foundation of its applications to any activity. How does one go about teaching oneself? How do YOU go about this? Do you use an actual technique? Let's look together at what we are up to in this realm\, and see if we can improve on and clarify what we already have going. We will start this workshop by 'working on ourselves' as we each understand this\, and then do our best to articulate what we are up to\, first in pairs or small groups\, and then to the larger group. Erik will take it from there. Years ago he decided to see if he could give himself a better lesson than he was able to get from someone else. This workshop is meant to awaken that exploration in others.

SUMMARY:Planning\, Giving\, and Evaluating Your Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Teaching groups is not the same as teaching one-on-one\, but doing it regularly can help you become a better teacher and improve your one-on-one teaching.\n There are many ways to approach group teaching\, and there is no one-size-fits-all. Teaching should be enjoyable (otherwise\, why do it?)\, so finding ways to teach groups that you like\, that challenge you in a good way\, and that you’ll have fun doing is important. However\, no matter what your group class looks like\, there are basics of how to effectively plan\, give\, and—most importantly—evaluate group teaching. Having a system to approach your group teaching in this way can help you gain more confidence. This can help you become a better presenter as a result. This workshop will be interactive. Participants will take part in a workshop\, but at the same time\, we will be looking down from “10 thousand feet” and discussing best general practices for planning\, giving\, and evaluating any group workshop\, no matter the topic.

SUMMARY:Sound Flow: Space and Resonance
DESCRIPTION:This class adds vocalizations to a gentle movement sequence to encourage sensory and spatial awareness. We begin in semi-supine\, using the floor and Alexander directions to support small movements of the arms and legs from a sense of the whole body. Simple vocalizations are then added to vibrate and resonate the spaces we discover from the inside out. Putting in pauses to release habits or judgement\, we will increase our stamina of attention through more complex movements and sounds while sitting\, all fours\, and finally standing. This class can be an excellent warmup for voice study or as a daily movement calibration\, as the relative ease of vocalization and movement indicates ease in the body.

SUMMARY:When Under Pressure How Practical Application of the Alexander Method Works
DESCRIPTION:This workshop can give participants practical tools to perform with more ease\, confidence\, and authenticity in many different areas of life\, regardless of their starting point\, background\, or ability level.\n \n From someone giving a birthday party speech to even the most experienced leaders\, lecturers\, professional musicians\, or just an Alexander Technique teacher explaining the work to a group of new people will often experience some degrees of performance anxiety. This workshop will give valuable insights to be able to help others while “performing”. \n \n Just walking up to the “hot spot” — that place where all eyes turn toward you — can make your heart race\, your hands grow cold\, and your breathing turn shallow. The anticipation of what others expect before you even begin often builds more tension than the act of speaking itself. For some\, just being in front of people is enough to send nerves unraveling. \n \n Performance Anxiety — A Different Way to Understand It\n \n Performance anxiety is NOT “all in your head.”\n \n In reality\, it’s something your whole body does.\n When you feel watched\, judged\, or under pressure\, your nervous system reacts automatically. Your neck tightens. Your shoulders lift. Your breath gets shallow. You may grip your jaw\, you feel cold sweaty hands\, you rush your speech\, or feel your heart pound. None of this means you’re incapable — it means your body is preparing for threat.\n \n The problem isn’t the feeling. It’s the extra tension when nervous that interferes with how naturally you move\, speak\, and think.\n \n When your body stops bracing\, your breath deepens on its own. Your voice steadies. Your thinking becomes clearer. You remain alert — but not rigid.\n \n This work is especially helpful for:\n \n * Public speaking\n * Auditions or performances\n * Teaching or presenting\n * High-stakes meetings\n * Everyday situations where you feel under scrutiny\n \n Performance anxiety doesn’t have to control you. With practice\, pressure becomes something you can meet with steadiness\, clarity\, and ease.

SUMMARY:Yoga for Every Body!
DESCRIPTION:This morning session will be a gentle yoga class that is adaptive and appropriate for all abilities\, especially those who have never taken a class or have felt intimidated by “yoga”. Although I use many traditional poses the approach is from an AT perspecitive of allowing and unwinding not in the doing a pose. This means there is a lot of space to be with yourself in a very deep and meaningful way. Sometime my students and I laugh as we recognize our desire to wrestle our bodies into submission. But there is no need to wrestle and when we treat ourselves with kindness it often opens doors we didn’t think were possible. \n \n The class that I developed during covid often began in semi-supine. Why not! It’s a wonderful place to start. Somewhere in all of my years of teaching I developed a sense of humor and a delight in playing so we will play with sublte transitions and weight shifts to encourage freedom and ease in our thinking and our movement. And although we are focused on ourselves we are also being reminded to be a part of the whole bringing compassion to ourselves and then out to others.

SUMMARY:Breath as Postural Process[tm]: Renewal in Our Work
DESCRIPTION:I uncovered the principles underlying the practice of BPP as a specific muscular coordination in 1985-87 while independently researching my doctoral dissertation on respiratory function in wind players. Later\, in reviewing FMA's respiratory writings\, I found strong alignment between his observations and my own\, particularly regarding the movement of the thorax as the primary act of efficient breathing. Since physiologically the thorax can be moved as FMA stipulated only by the coordination that I had found\, I concluded that the coordination of BPP\, or something very like it\, is essentially what FMA was alluding to in all of his respiratory writings. Is BPP then FMA's mysterious "new method of respiratory re-education"? Whether you're just curious\, likely skeptical\, or really would like to know\, you can begin to answer that question for yourself by attending this session. Ask yourself whether it mightn't be worthwhile not only to have but also to share—in our founder's voice as well as in his name—this understanding and practice of breath.\n "a game changer"--Mara Sokolsky

SUMMARY:Exploring the Principles of the Alexander Technique with People with Diverse Abilities in Group Settings
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by: Lisa First M.AmSAT\, MA\; and Tommy Swanson M.AmSAT\, LPMT\, MT-BC \n \n \n We often teach the Alexander Technique with expectations as to the functioning and behavior of our students. In this workshop\, we cover a broad spectrum of life-experience\, and our joint experiences teaching people with psycho-physical disabilities. These may include developmental disabilities\, motor disabilities\, visual impairments\, & levels of hearing. \n \n We receive from our students with disabilities in the present\, and we meet them where they are. This requires intelligent thinking\, while remaining true to the Alexander Technique principles. How can we receive and be open to our inner resources to support our disabled students' learning? In this workshop\, we will discuss how to inspire our students to embrace and enjoy connection within a group setting. \n \n We welcome you to our community to have a new experience working with people with and without disabilities. Please join us as we support learning to feel more comfortable and increasing confidence in supporting people with disabilities. Learn how to create a space that is accessible for all\, and some ways to approach a variety of disabilities. \n \n Through the use of small groups and workshop specific shared activities\, we will offer exciting new ways of working. Let us guide you through a new ways of thinking and being. \n \n We will also explore working with clients in wheel-chairs\, how to work in and out of chairs online and in person. Additionally\, we will share the use of hands and language\, including sign language and visual language\, when supporting people with developmental disabilities. We will examine working with students that are blind and deaf\, and how their perceptions of self can be greatly supported by how we as teachers use ourselves. \n \n Lisa and Tommy look forward to sharing the work we are doing as skilled Alexander Technique Teachers who support people with disabilities!

SUMMARY:From Teacher to Partner: Integrating Coaching Skills into Alexander Teaching
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive 90-minute workshop\, I explore how integrating health coaching skills has deepened my work as an Alexander Technique teacher. Many students experience meaningful change during lessons yet struggle to carry that insight into daily life. Coaching tools did not replace Alexander principles—they strengthened them. By refining how I listen\, question\, and respond\, my role shifted from expert instructor to collaborative partner\, while remaining grounded in awareness\, inhibition\, and direction.\n \n Participants will be introduced to four coaching competencies that complement Alexander work:\n 1) Deep listening — Hearing not only physical habits\, but also values\, fears\, motivations\, and readiness for change.\n \n 2) Powerful questioning — Inviting curiosity\, self-awareness\, and alignment with what matters most to the student.\n \n 3) Reflective language and affirmations — Building self-efficacy and easing perfectionism without turning lessons into praise or therapy.\n \n 4) Stages of change awareness — Meeting students where they are rather than assuming readiness for action.\n \n Through brief teaching segments\, live demonstration\, discussion\, and guided partner practice\, participants will explore how to integrate these skills into both private lessons and group classes. We will experiment with practical language shifts\, question frameworks that evoke insight\, and simple structures for designing small\, realistic “micro-experiments” between sessions to support integration.\n \n This coaching-informed approach preserves the essence of the Alexander Technique. It clarifies intention\, strengthens trust\, and supports student agency. Rather than pushing for change\, we learn to create conditions in which change is more likely to emerge.\n \n Suitable for trainees and experienced teachers\, this session offers concrete tools\, practical phrases\, and a clear framework for integrating coaching skills without diluting core principles. Participants will leave with greater confidence in facilitating lasting learning and supporting students beyond the teaching table.\n \n The workshop is designed to accommodate diverse learning styles. Participation options include seated or standing engagement\, observation-only roles during partner work\, and verbal or written reflection formats. Partner exercises emphasize consent\, psychological safety\, and opt-out flexibility. By modeling adaptability and responsiveness\, this workshop embodies meeting the moment—supporting inclusion\, agency\, and sustainable performance for diverse learners and teachers alike.

SUMMARY:Games for Hands and Feet Or How Our Extremities Boost Our Up!
DESCRIPTION:This class offers an opportunity to explore the nuances and possibilities in how we access our awareness and use our extremities. While we rely on our hands and feet for daily activities we often don’t give them our full attention either in what they are doing or how they relate to our sense of self. &nbsp\;This workshop serves as an exploration of their form\, function\, coordination and relationship to the whole through play that is designed to pique our interest in what hands and feet do.\n \n The workshop will begin with playful movement explorations designed to highlight awareness of the extremities\, especially the hands and feet. These exercises can be performed individually and are easily adaptable and accessible to use with students.&nbsp\;We will then work in pairs or small groups to explore what we “see\, feel\, sense” in ourselves and in others while exploring movement patterns and coordination.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Sensing how the fingers/wrist/elbow respond to and activate shoulder and back.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Or how the movement of the foot affects the hips and spine or visa versa.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;As we continue our explorations we will also look at how renewed interest in the extremities can activate our “up” and a fuller expression of ease.

SUMMARY:Osteoporosis & the Alexander Technique: Coordination\, Confidence\, and Intelligent Loading A 90-Minute Workshop for Alexander Technique Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Osteoporosis is often framed as fragility or a condition of shrinking\, bracing\, and avoiding. In response\, many well-meaning professionals (and AT practitioners) adopt protective strategies that inadvertently increase rigidity\, fear of movement\, and even fall risk. But bone is not glass. It is living\, dynamic tissue that responds to how force travels through the body. \n This 90-minute workshop is designed specifically for Alexander Technique teachers who want a clear\, research-informed understanding of osteoporosis and a nuanced approach to working with this population. We will explore current medical definitions and screening criteria as outlined by organizations such as the National Osteoporosis Foundation and the World Health Organization\, while translating this information into practical\, coordination-based teaching strategies.\n Rather than focusing solely on what to avoid\, this workshop emphasizes what we can restore: efficient load transfer\, dynamic adaptability\, and confidence in movement.\n Together we will explore:\n Common postural adaptations in individuals diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis\n The controversy around spinal flexion\, yoga postures\, and how to approach bending with clarity \n How over-cueing “don’t round” can create stiffness and increase compressive forces\n Practical applications of Primary Control and Position of Mechanical Advantage to distribute force safely and efficiently\n Teaching strategies for chair work\, hip hinging\, constructive rest modifications\, and weight transfer\n The psycho-physical dimensions of fear of falling and how AT principles reduce co-contraction and rigidity\n A brief overview of “conservative treatments” available for low bone density including nutrition\, jump/step training\, vibration therapy\, weight training (following the LiftMore research-based protocol)\, and the controversy around calcium and supplements. \n We will examine how bracing\, collapse\, and anticipatory tightening alter load distribution and how direction\, widening\, and integrated movement can improve shock absorption and stability. Participants will engage in experiential activities that highlight the difference between protective stiffening and coordinated support.\n Special attention will be given to language. Messages rooted in fragility can unconsciously amplify fear\, while messages grounded in adaptability support resilience. As practitioners\, we are uniquely positioned to help clients/students experience strength emerging from coordination rather than force.\n Our role is to improve use\, which in turn\, influences how force travels through the skeletal system. \n This workshop is appropriate for everyone\, especially those who work with populations with low bone density. It is especially relevant for those teaching balance classes\, working with clients who have kyphosis or fracture history\, or navigating the widespread confusion about flexion\, twisting\, and safety.\n Participants will leave with:\n -A clear conceptual model of osteoporosis\n -Practical\, teachable movement applications\n -Refined language to reduce fear-based rigidity\n -Greater confidence in working with bone-density and fracture concerns\n -Awareness around research-based conservative treatments available\n Bone responds to intelligent use. When the head releases forward and up\, when the back widens\, when the legs receive weight dynamically\, we are not merely “protecting” bone we are supporting its living adaptability.\n This workshop invites a shift from fragility to function\, from avoidance to awareness\, and from fear to coordinated strength.

SUMMARY:AT spirals and ease in violin and viola playing
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is geared towards string players\, violists and violinists in particular\, as well as AT teachers and trainees interested in learning various approaches to working with musicians.\n The workshop revolves around answering one question: how do we embody ease while playing a string instrument?\n \n In service of asking this question\, the workshop is structured to cover the following sections:\n \n Applied AT principles:\n \n -Biotensegrity - release and muscle tone\n -Head - Neck - Back (& pelvis)\n -Breath\n -Oral seal\n -Solar plexus release\n -The hand loop - oppositional flow and throughness\n -Arm spirals\n -Reliable sensory appreciation - individual hands-on and mirror work\n -The ground - heels and big toes\n -Ankles - knees - hip joints\n -Spirals and the underneath support\n \n String playing:\n \n -Collarbones\n -The chinrest - opposition and the oral seal\n -Left-hand finger throughness - dexterity and vibrato\n -Bow hand - counterspirals\, tone and articulation\n -Resonance\n -Some challenges:\n Protection instinct - fetal position\n Pelvis orientation and rotation\n Left-shoulder away from right hip\n -Musical habits and everyday life\n -Local and global focus\n -Q & A\n \n The order of these topics are meant to build on each other\, moving the applications of the AT principles from the general to the specific\, and back to a bigger picture for a holistic integration. \n \n This presentation is a boiled-down exposition of my current understanding of how the Alexander Technique can enhance the wellbeing and performance of musicians. It is also an autobiographical account of my continuing journey of integrating AT work with my music teaching and performing practices. \n \n This workshop is designed to accommodate for the following types of attendees: music students and teachers\, as well as AT trainees and teachers interested in working with musicians. The activities can vary their focus and implementation based on the ratio of attendees. AT teachers and trainees may be invited to assist in giving hands-on to musicians with less AT experience.\n Additionally\, I may offer hands-on to a selection of attendees during the various activities. \n \n The pacing of the workshop would also vary\, for example\, with less time spent in the first half of the program if the majority of attendees have a high level of experience with AT work. This would allow more time for exploring string specific topics in more detail\, as well as a lengthier Q & A.\n \n Activities can be adapted to standing or sitting depending on the needs of all involved.\n Which also pairs perfectly with string playing\, which often requires a knowledge of how to work in both scenarios.

SUMMARY:Embodied Rhythm: Integrating Breath\, Body Percussion\, and Improvisation through the Alexander Technique
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description:This experiential workshop explores rhythm as a dynamic expression of coordination\, presence\, and responsiveness through the lens of the Alexander Technique. Designed for teachers-in-training and certified teachers alike\, the session integrates breath work\, body percussion\, and structured improvisation to illuminate how conscious inhibition and direction can support rhythmic vitality without excess tension.\n\n\nRhythm is often approached as something to achieve or perform. In this workshop\, we instead investigate rhythm as an emergent quality arising from balanced tone\, responsive breathing\, and integrated coordination. Drawing on foundational Alexander principles—awareness\, inhibition\, direction\, and primary control—we will explore how habitual effort in response to rhythmic stimuli can interfere with timing\, phrasing\, and fluidity.\n\n\nThrough guided experimentation\, participants will observe how the impulse to “do” rhythm frequently leads to tightening\, breath-holding\, or compressive patterns that disrupt natural flow. By pausing\, redirecting\, and allowing organized support to precede action\, rhythm can be experienced not as imposed structure but as a living expression of whole-body responsiveness.\n\n\nParticipants will engage in:\n\nBreath-centered explorations revealing the natural elasticity of the respiratory mechanism and its psychophysical relationship to pulse and phrasing.Body percussion sequences (clapping\, stepping\, and vocalizing) used as practical laboratories for studying coordination\, balance\, and directional clarity.Rhythmic improvisational structures that encourage play\, listening\, and adaptability while maintaining conscious use.Partner-based observation to refine perceptual skills and deepen awareness of use in relation to rhythm and coordination.Through progressive layering—from a simple pulse to polyrhythmic patterns—we will observe how habits such as stiffening\, breath holding\, or narrowing attention interfere with rhythmic flow. Applying inhibition and direction in real time allows participants to experience broader awareness\, greater resilience\, and increased responsiveness in action.\n\nAccessibility and inclusivity are central to the workshop design. No prior musical training is required\, and all rhythmic material is taught aurally and through embodied exploration\, reinforcing the Alexander principle that experience precedes explanation. Activities are adaptable for seated\, standing\, or mobility-limited participation\, with multiple pacing options and clear verbal guidance to support diverse learning styles and abilities. Participants are encouraged to work within their own range of comfort and capacity\, fostering an environment that prioritizes curiosity\, self-regulation\, and choice.\n\n

SUMMARY:How Are You Thinking About Direction? A Talking/Listening Circle Approach
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop for sharing thoughts to strengthen our sense of individuality as part of a greater community. We will briefly demonstrate for participants the process of a Talking/Listening Circle\, sharing our experience and understanding of F. M. Alexander’s concept of “Direction.” Then we will have participants break out into smaller Talking/Listening Circle groups for a comfortable and adequate period of time for each person to speak and be heard on this same topic.\n \n Our group of six (the presenters) has been practicing communication skills using ProSocial principles and Talking/Listening circles. In our five+ years of meeting weekly on Zoom\, we have developed trust and understanding\, supporting us when holding discussions of subjects which may kindle a wide range of opinions and feelings. \n \n What is ProSocial? David Sloan Wilson’s ProSocial principles provide a framework for enhancing cooperation in groups by fostering shared identity\, equitable resource distribution\, and fair decision-making to help groups function as cooperative organisms. https://www.prosocial.world/\n \n What is a Talking/Listening Circle? It is a place where participants gather in a circle to share thoughts and feelings and to focus on deep\, respectful listening rather than on debate or problem-solving. A Talking/Listening Circle is where you can practice receiving someone else’s thoughts without formulating a response while you are listening. Each participant will have a turn to speak to the group of non-judgmental witnesses. The speaker practices speaking authentically—tuning in to what the present moment evokes.\n \n Each participant may have a different way of expressing their understanding of Direction. The Talking/Listening Circle format can be a first step towards speaking authentically from their current understanding and listening to others without judgment.\n \n We are offering this workshop as a demonstration to the larger community of Alexander Technique teachers in approaching topics that may create conflict—inviting our colleagues in AmSAT to recognize the plurality of individual experiences and understandings before proceeding into deeper engagement.\n\nRuth&nbsp\;Rootberg is a member of the&nbsp\;AT Science Cohorts group though she won't be presenting at this ACGM.

SUMMARY:Healing and the Alexander Technique: A Listening Circle
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this session will be done by sign-up at the registration desk during the conference.\n\nAs cancer survivors\, the two of us have been on long healing journeys through allopathic\, integrative\, and metaphysical pathways. . We used our skills of awareness\, inhibition and direction to facilitate the process of seeing deep patterns that were factors in our illness and to use conscious guidance in releasing the unhelpful energies.&nbsp\;\nFrom where we are now in our healing journey\, Performance for Life means keeping those deep questions about life front and center. We are consciously bringing hidden layers of our selfhood to the light and we find by sharing with each other we are affirmed and enlivened. We feel ready to do this with a small gathering of colleagues who may have made healing journeys of their own.\n\nWe hope this offering will invite others to explore creative ways to connect with unconscious patterns as Karen shares some visual journaling and Kathy some subtle-pelvic movements. We will hold the space so that all participants can safely reveal and explore an authentic self together with others on a healing journey.

SUMMARY:F.M. Alexander technique as a response to these cultural shifts. (Title to be Updated)
DESCRIPTION:In an ever changing world\, Alexander Technique is vital to the performance of everyday life. During this combo lecture/experiential workshop\, panelists take the audience back to where it all began. Using Alexander's life and the second half of the Industrial Revolution as reference points\, this workshop explores the paralleling technological\, social\, and political realities of his time to the present and how F.M. Alexander molded his technique as a response to these cultural shifts.\n \n Additionally\, recognizing these similarities\, attendees will investigate their own use with fashion and technological objects from Alexander’s time and present day technology\, identify what principles apply to the present and the past\, and reflect on how this information can influence their future practice.\n \n If what F.M. understood was helpful for people in the 1900s and is still useful for us now\, then the timelessness of his work goes beyond any condition/culture and humans have the “freedom to change.”

SUMMARY:In the Moment Anything Can Happen
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a collaborative exploration of how anything can happen in a given moment.\n \n Meeting the moment asks us as Alexander Technique teachers to be present\, available to change\, and responsive to the uniqueness of what might emerge. Whether we are teaching or engaging in all the ordinary and extraordinary activities of our lives\, this workshop will address the skills of doing less while engaging with the demands of the moment. We will explore how the quality of our attention grounds us. As our rapidly changing world asks more from us\, these abilities at the core of our work are needed now more than ever. \n \n In the moment anything can happen speaks to what’s possible when we move from the familiar patterns we know toward the vitality of the unknown - where something genuinely new\, fresh and unexpected can occur. \n \n Our roots are in decades of collaborating at ACAT. Now as the Collaborating8\, we continue to be inspired by how the intersection of our multiple\, complementary approaches is a fertile environment for growth. The support we feel from each other creates community and safety. In our workshop we will foster this atmosphere and make the time to integrate what we discover in our work together.\n \n The Collaborating8 will offer guided exercises and hands-on exploration to use in teaching private lessons and group classes.\n\nThe Collaborating8 taught Continuing Learning workshops at the Dublin Congress last summer and wrote an article about it that was recently published in&nbsp\;The 13th International Congress Papers.&nbsp\;Here it is&nbsp\;- Check it out!&nbsp\; \n \n\n Come collabor8 with us in meeting the moment!\n\n

SUMMARY:Restoring sensory appreciation: how can we enjoy our performance more?
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for Alexander Technique teachers who would like to enjoy the process of teaching more. Our work\, at least in part\, has a side effect of restoring a more reliable relationship with our own sensory appreciation. This phrase appears hundreds of times in F.M. Alexander's writings\, usually with the caveat that you can't trust your feelings. My experience of the work was exactly the opposite - from the first experience I had\, I began to trust them more! This has led me to use inhibition\, awareness\, and direction as guides in exploring all of our senses. I really enjoy guiding groups through a sequential experience of the 12 cranial nerves\, with plenty of time for inhibition\, returning to the whole self\, rest\, and exploratory movement. In this workshop that's exactly what we will do. It will be mostly experiential\, since our time together is relatively short. Each participant will have the freedom to follow my somatic guidance through all 12 nerves\, referring to developmental movement connections grounded in the Dart Procedures as well as more improvisatory movement prompts. Everyone will be given an information packet filled with accurate anatomy and physiology covering each nerve to support cognitive understanding\, but we won't be covering all the information verbally.

SUMMARY:Teaching Proprioception Using Life Size Bone Models
DESCRIPTION:Description: Life size models of bones can help clients begin to quickly direct themselves and apply the AT principles on their own away from sessions. By giving clients simple\, clear information about their bones and how to locate proprioceptively the spaces between their bones\, you can help them start to shift away from their traditional concepts of balance\, alignment\, and posture. Your clients can gain greater confidence\, independence\, and skill with more agency and reliability.\n \n Joints are lively sites of bony relationships. Stability can be redefined for your clients as whole-person\, integrated\, and coordinated mobility happening inside their joints\, instead of the traditional concept of stability as rigidity through locked joints. \n \n This workshop will introduce new ways of teaching joint proprioception with clarity using bone models and image cueing language. We will include locating relationships between:\n \n • The skull and jaw\; and the skull\, atlas\, and axis.\n • The calcaneus\, sesamoid bones\, and talus.\n • The hip sockets and femur.\n • The talus\, tibia\, and femur. \n • The clavicle\, scapula\, and humerus\, offering excellent ways to quickly free up that common “tight neck and shoulders” complaint that so many clients bring to their initial AT lessons.

SUMMARY:The Impulse for Voice and Song
DESCRIPTION:Olga Averino was my principal voice teacher. In her book\, “The Principles and Art of Singing\,” (published by the Institut for F.M. Alexander’s Teknik\, Denmark)\, Averino writes\, “The process of good singing is a process of physical and psychological coordination. In itself it produces no sound\, but it creates the conditions which allow the imagination to produce the sound.” Averino called this impulse\, and stimulating the understanding and experience of impulse was the gift she gave me and the generations of singers she taught. Impulse\, a vital force present in every living thing\, is the connecting power between body and mind. Understood from a vocal perspective it is what ignites the diaphragm to sent air up and through the vocal resulting in sound. From an Alexander perspective\, it is the dynamic synergy between the muscles of posture\, movement and respiration. Our awareness of and connection to impulse make singing\, or any activity\, centered and seemingly effortless. When we sing “on impulse” we become energized and focused and our voices ring with authenticity and nuance.\n \n The main goal of our workshop is to experience the aliveness and freedom that come from singing and speaking on breath and impulse. We will explore ways of uncovering impulse in ourselves\, bringing it to consciousness and working with it. We will discern the difference between “allowing” and “doing” as it relates to voice and become aware of natural\, reflexive breathing. Group singing of simple songs will inspire joyful\, rhythmic and expressive singing. There is no previous singing experience necessary to attend this class\, and it is open to the general public as well as Alexander Technique students\, trainees and teachers.

SUMMARY:Presence in Thought & Action at Any Speed: An Exploration of Pace\, Timing\, and Movement
DESCRIPTION:We put thought to action every day\, creating the movements and expressions that occupy our waking world\, and at the intersection between thought and action lies agency. Yet our lives require navigating many different paces in daily activity\, artistic performance\, and the practice of our craft. How do we direct ourselves through the tempos of our actions? Do you think of speed as big or small\, as “how much” or “how soon”? What happens when we need to change speed in the moment?\n \n This workshop dives into how we use the Alexander Technique to maintain presence across the spectrum of speeds. Together\, we’ll clarify what we mean by pace and speed\, discuss the cultural assumptions we inherit about time\, and explore how those ideas shape the way we direct ourselves. Experiential group activities will explore the intersection of thought and action\, and what it is like to navigate tempo in real time. We will also examine where our attention sits in the moment (front\, middle\, or back of an action) and how that choice affects pacing\, urgency\, and coordination. Drawing on over 20 years of professional drumming experience\, Bryan will also give an inside look at how the Alexander Technique helps drummers navigate four-way coordination (where the four limbs may move at different speeds within the same musical tempo)\, and how anyone can use multi-limb awareness to maintain flow within the whole.\n \n Join for an educational\, exploratory\, and interactive session toward having choice at any speed.\n \n Activities can be done seated and will be self-selecting. Participation in activities is not required for attendance\, and individualized hands-on practice will not be included. The workshop is designed to be accessible to the general public and practitioners\, and to participants with diverse needs and abilities.

SUMMARY:Student-Centered Teaching and Learning: Meeting the Moment in the Teaching Studio
DESCRIPTION:As the Alexander Technique enters broader conversations about performance—on stage\, in movement practice\, at work\, and in daily life—the way we teach becomes inseparable from what we teach. If performance is about meeting the moments of heightened awareness\, then our pedagogy must cultivate that capacity in real time.\n This workshop explores a student-centered recognition approach to Alexander Technique teaching through placing the student’s process as the focus of the learning. We will explore the structure of the lesson\, content\, and language during an AT lesson. \n Designed for teachers at all stages\, this session invites participants to reimagine the teaching studio as a training ground for performing well in life—not through instruction alone\, but through collaborative inquiry.\n Come ready to explore how meeting the moment in teaching prepares our students to meet the moments of their lives.

SUMMARY:The Elephant In The Room: Addressing Emotional and Psychological Responses in Alexander Technique Teaching - Presented by CATPA
DESCRIPTION:The Committee for Alexander Technique in the Performing Arts (CATPA) will facilitate a structured conversation for Alexander Technique teachers and trainees exploring how we meet the moment when a student presents an emotional or psychological response during a lesson.\n \n In our work with actors\, dancers\, and musicians\, such moments are not uncommon. Because Alexander Technique invites increased awareness of habitual neuromuscular coordination and nervous system patterns\, shifts in use can sometimes coincide with unexpected emotional responses. Yet explicit conversation about how to navigate these moments—ethically\, skillfully\, and within scope of our practice remains somewhat limited and sometimes even avoided. \n \n As a committee\, we have found it helpful to share personal approaches and resources when these situations arise\, learning from and inspiring each other. Drawing on our collective experience\, we seek to open a dialogue about trauma-informed and consent-forward practices that support student safety while staying within the scope of what our teaching is. As our cultural landscape shifts and students arrive with increasingly complex lived experiences\, this conversation feels both timely and useful.

SUMMARY:Tuning for Peak Performance
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will be exploring how the Technique enables optimal organization for movement and performance. There are many ways to define the Technique\, but one very important one is as a means whereby to enable the most efficient and effective movement possible. While we are exploring this organization we will experience the coordination of a long spine with our suspension system\, breath\, balance\, and environment and tool handling. We will also notice how Alexander’s directions describe this integration. In addition we will experience how the same organization for peak performance is close to the optimal quality of hands on teacher communication.

SUMMARY:Your Body\, Your Instrument; Jessica Wolf’s Art of Breathing for Working With Performers
DESCRIPTION:"Your body is fueled by your breath” (Jessica Wolf)\, and is the primary means of expression for an artist\, regardless of discipline.\n \n Designated Art of Breathing teacher trainers Rachel Bernsen\, Eleanor Taylor and Rebecca Tuffey share activities and approaches from the Art of Breathing to expand your teaching repertoire for working with a range of performing artists including dancers\, singers\, actors\, and instrumentalists. \n Jessica’s legacy in establishing the Alexander program at the Yale’s School of Drama over 26 years and her extensive work with professional performers is exemplified in Art of Breathing’s explorations of sound\, movement\, addressing performance anxiety\, and her trademark “Breathing Costume” work for actors. Rebecca\, Eleanor\, and Rachel each bring considerable experience working with performers at all levels. All teachers and trainees are welcome to join us for this experiential workshop.\n \n \n How our workshop will be accessible: \n For participants with limited mobility we will offer seated modification for floor activities\, such as the lie-down. We will also offer modifications and seated options for all explorations and partnering activities involving standing and moving through space. We will have an access needs check in at the beginning of our workshop and individual student needs will be honored and accommodated throughout.
